Run goverment “like a business”??

I’m just going to say, anybody who’s upset about government waste probably hasn’t ever worked for a large corporation.  I worked for a corporation in the midwest when a new division VP decided he’d move the division headquarters to the east coast “to be closer to our major markets.”  It was widely believed that his family didn’t want to move to the midwest. Not only did the physical move cost a lot of money, but the company lost a lot of very good, very experienced people who didn’t want to leave their homes and families.  WITHIN A YEAR that VP was gone and what was left of the division was moved back to the midwestern headquarters.

For those who trust “businessmen” more than politicians, I’d just like to know how many CEO’s they’ve voted for lately?  Here’s who politicians are: they are devoted to trying to do the things you want them to do so you’ll vote for them. Yes, some are crooked, but their job is to work for you.  Here’s what a businessperson’s job is: bring in as much money as possible with minimal outlay.  If they can sell a cheap piece of junk for 10 times what it’s worth, that’s good.  If they can get 75 hours of labor out of someone but only pay them for 40, that’s good.  I know there are good, moral businesspeople out there – I’ve known a few – but the basic principle of business is that profit rules.

Am I the only one who remembers, during the Obamacare negotiations, conservatives yelling about “government death panels” even as former insurance claims adjusters testifying about denying lifesaving procedures in order to maximize profits?

If you want businesspeople in government, remember that not all businessmen can be just as crooked as politicians. You may be voting for the manager who wanted you to work unpaid overtime, the manufacturer of the gadget that broke two days after the warranty expired, and the store that raised prices on shovels and salt the day the weather service forecast a blizzard; the pharma speculator who quadrupled the price of a lifesaving drug, the insurance executive who can buy another vacation chalet because they denied a lifesaving procedure for grannies and grandpaws, or the real-estate magnate who’s defrauding banks and stiffing tradespeople.

Government’s job is to create an environment so all people can live their best lives.  Business’s job is to get maximum profit from some people so some other people can accumulate even more.
