Here are the roots of this blog rant: when I was a kid, the Vietnam war was raging and so were protests by the “counter culture.” One of the right wing’s favorite slogans was “America – love it or leave it!” Things didn’t change much – about 35 years later the bookstores I frequented were displaying a new book with the headline “Why the Left Hates America” (by someone named Daniel Flynn.)
But that’s just plain wrong. If you love your home but the roof leaks, you don’t leave it, you fix it. If you love your kid but they have a disability, you don’t disown them, you do everything you can to help them overcome it. If you love something or someone, you do everything you can to help it or them become even better.
That’s what Jefferson, Washington, Lincoln, Roosevelt did, as well as Frederick Douglas, Susan B. Anthony, Martin Luther King,..
Conservatives dislike change – that’s a dictionary definition. But the USA was intentionally created to be able to change, with frequent elections and the ability to amend and modify the constitution. So isn’t it really the conservatives who hate the core idea of the United States of America?
