For too long, conservatives have claimed the title of “patriots.” But historically, everything they want to preserve —
or go back to —
was in its time the result of a progressive movement. It’s easy to forget that the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were probably the two most progressive binding legal documents of the 17th Century. Every step of the way, from before the Declaration, through the Emancipation Proclamation and Women’s Suffrage, into the ongoing battles for equal rights and equal opportunities, conservatives have stood at the sidelines, jeering and shouting “this time they’ve gone too far!” But we know that they catch up in about a hundred years. Finally, now, most of them would agree that they don’t want to go back to the time when people were bought and sold. Most of them.
